Addressing Risk for Depression and Unmet Social Needs among Immigrant Latina Mothers

Home / Projects / Addressing Risk for Depression and Unmet Social Needs among Immigrant Latina Mothers

Project: Mothers and Babies

Mothers and Babies is an interdisciplinary team of a social worker, pediatrician, and psychiatrist in Baltimore, Maryland.

Wicked Problem

Due to poverty and social isolation, there is a lack of access to mental health care for Latina immigrant mothers at high risk of depression.

Approach

Our approach is to meet mothers where they gather to provide an evidence based group mental health intervention.

In partnership, early learning center staff recommend program participation to women in their existing programs or who otherwise seem likely to benefit. A therapist co-facilitates the 12-session intervention with a community health worker or school staff.

Impact

Our goal is to provide mothers with skills to support their own and their children’s mental wellbeing in all zero to five settings in the state of Maryland.

Preliminary results indicate that the program is feasible and acceptable. We will share more information when the project completes at the end of 2022.
