Omara Afzal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, New York, and currently the Medical Director of the OB/GYN Ambulatory Practice at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Afzal completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency in 2012 from New York Medical College and subsequently completed a Masters in Public Health in Health Policy and Management from the same institution. After her training she worked with Doctors Without Borders in South Sudan, Africa, as the sole OB/GYN for a rural refugee community.
Dr. Afzal joined Mount Sinai Hospital initially as a Global Women’s Health Fellow, working on research and clinical care in global context to improve health care capacity in areas of need. She worked primarily in South Africa and Liberia for training and education of local health care workers in cervical cancer screening and prevention, setting up sustainable and ongoing programs. Dr. Afzal stayed at Mount Sinai Hospital as an attending physician, and she is now practicing with some of those global concepts locally within her role as Medical Director of the women’s health clinic, which provides care for an under-served population of Harlem and the South Bronx.
