Denver Health
Denver, Colorado
Before attending college I spent a year as a Rotary Exchange student in Costa Rica. This life altering experience compelled me to obtain a BA in Latin American Studies and Global Leadership and an MA in Spanish Literature from Ohio University. After, while working for an organization called Thinking Beyond Borders and witnessing health injustice in Guatemala and South Africa, I was impassioned to pursue a clinical degree in order to marry my liberal arts side with a clinical lens to promote equitable change.
I completed my BSN at the University of Colorado in 2014 and began my career as a Diabetes Nurse in 2015 at the Barbara Davis Center for Type 1 Diabetes. The BDC provided a strong foundation of working in an integrated team comprised of RDs, MDs, PAs, RNs and SWs to deliver care.
I chose to transition to Denver Health two years ago because of Denver Health’s mission to provide health care to the under-served communities. My leadership and commitment to working in Diabetes is demonstrated in a multifaceted way. Some of my efforts include: 1:1 patient centered care, creation and management of an outpatient diabetes education champion team, serving as a liaison for the Ambulatory Nurse Council and the Nursing Advisory Council, advancing access to diabetes technology and education through the initiation of a pump/technology clinic at Endocrinology clinic and system wide policy work addressing hypoglycemia treatment guidelines and RN scope of practice in Diabetes. I am dedicated to addressing bigger picture thinking and in 2019, educated over 250 health professionals with my specific offerings addressing health equity as they focused on “Bias and Stigma in Diabetes Care and Education” and “Food Insecurity in our population with Diabetes”.
A few years ago I had the fortuity of attending a speech by Dr. Cornel West. He stated that “working in social justice our work is never done”. I believe this to be one of the greatest challenges that our team faces when embarking on a project in health equity. The work is always evolving and to keep working proactively rather than re-actively as we come up against changing barriers, policies, and social determinants.
Outside of work, I love to travel, am yoga teacher and spend time skiing, hiking and tending to our garden, chickens and bees!
