He completed his APA accredited predoctoral psychology internship and postdoctoral psychology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Dr. Coffey is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of California.
As an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) and Keck School of Medicine of USC, Dr. Coffey has extensive experience implementing the Incredible Years (IY) Parent Program in both clinical and community-based settings. He is an IY Certified Agency Mentor and provides training and group supervision for parent group leaders in Southern California. The program at CHLA provides approximately 24 parent and child IY groups annually to predominantly Latino parents from the community in English and Spanish and recently introduced IY into primary care at CHLA.
Dr. Coffey also serves as the Child & Family Program Area Lead and supervises a team of 14 mental health clinicians, 4 postdoctoral psychology fellows, and 2 predoctoral psychology interns in providing mental health services for children age 6 to 12 years and their families. He is enrolled in the M.S. program in Clinical, Biomedical, and Translational Investigations in the Department of Preventive Medicine at USC and anticipates completion of this degree in 2018. His focus in this program is developing the skills needed to investigate the impact of IY on pediatric health service utilization. Dr. Coffey is passionate about implementing IY because he has seen firsthand the effective results the program has on improving the behavior of children with conduct problems and giving parents the skills and confidence to build positive relationships with their children and overcome barriers to realizing change in their children's behavior.
