Are you anxious about doctor visits? Animals experience anxiety with their visits, too. Erica Tricarico writes in dvm360.com that, according to veterinarian Marie Hopfensperger, a majority of dogs “show signs of fear or apprehension at the clinic.”
Dr. Hopfensperger, who runs the Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center’s Behavior Service, shared at this year’s Veterinary Meeting & Expo (VMX) several strategies for helping canines conquer anxiety. These include:
- Moving anxious dogs directly into the exam room or a holding room
- Having owners check in and out without their dog
- Empowering client service representatives to recognize stress and intervene
She goes on to share several other strategies plus a handout to assist with combating canine anxiety and fear while at the veterinarian’s office.
